Just found this video. Should be reading more Sexton, but Marjorie sent me a New Pornographers video (which I liked), and that lead me to browse other music videos. I wanted to find a version of Wichita Lineman that had qood sound quality but wasn’t one of the early 1970s Glen Campbell TV appearances ones. And found this. Heheh, not the most popular video on youtube — with only 200 plays in a year — but I love it.
One of my favorite songs, one of my favorite things to do — riding Amtrak’s Coast Starlight. Overnight trains — talk about good reading, musing-out-the-window, writing, thinking, snoozing, chatting-with-fellow-passengers time. The first time I rode it, in 1999, I read a volume Eleanor Roosevelt’s letters, and by the time I got to Portland, I had traveled to the 1930s and ridden a few trains with ER as well as made it from LA to Portland.
Anyway, this section of the trip is in California between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo.
Addendum 08-13-08: Just saw on Wikipedia that “Wichita Lineman” ranked #192 on Rolling Stone’s list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” And, as the Wikipedia author says, “It has been referred to as ‘the first existential country song.'” It would definitely make my top 25, possibly my top 10.
